Sarah Leishman-Social Worker

Sarah seemed like a really quit, soft spoken individual; but maybe her job needs her to be that way. She told us a lot of what it's like working with different people, and listening to what has happened in their lives. I don't think it's a easy job at all, because you have to listen to some horrible things that some people have had to overcome. She told us how you have to be strong mentally and emotionally, and have a mature attitutde towards everyone. Also, she mentioned that many social workers do not make a lot of money and I was really surprised that they don't. Sarah also bought yarn with her, and each person held on the one piece of it, then threw it to someone else while saying smoeone who is important in their life, and I thought that was  a really neat idea. Personally, I don't think I could be a social worker just because of the emtotional aspect of it all.

Ann Liebau-Midwife

I thought she was really good and interesting! She talked about a lot of different things like the type of education you need, how much the pay is, and she even brought an example of how the baby would come out. Also, I enjoyed how she brought one of the students in training, and she really gave me a good idea of what the job is like, and what it takes to be able to do it. It made me really interested in what they do, and I even considered it as a career after highschool.

Scott Wahl

His talk about RIM and Blackberrys was good, but a little boring in my opinion. Whenever someone asked him a question, he wouldn't directly answer it. He would talk about something else relating to it, but not answer the actual question. For the msot part, I thought he had a lot of interesting things to say.

Jen- Prof of enviromental science

I give her a lot of credit for everything she had done so far. She has gone to school for over 8 years, she has a family to take care of and yet she still finds the time to be a teacher. She had so many interesting things to talk about like her school, and how she got to where she is. Her daughters were a little bit of a distraction, so at times it was hard to focus on everything she was saying. Overall, I really liked how she was talking with us and getting our input on everything instead of just talking to us and us starring at her.

Judith Koeller

Personally, I thought the way she described her job as being a math prof was really boring. I have never wanted to be a teacher, and her explanation about it made me back away from the thought even further. I thought she wasn't that great of a speaker, and she jsut kept me really bored for most of the time she was in the class.

Melissa Durrell

Melissa was a really good speaker and she had a lot of interesting things to say. I have never really thought of a journalist, or a city councillor as a career, but after she talked about them it got me really interested in the idea.I have always enjoyed reading and writing, but I thought of it as more of a hobby to do in my spare time, than do it full time. It definitely opened my eyes more about this field of work and that they really do way more exciting things than just sit and write all day. It seems like ones of those careers where something new happens everyday/

Ken North- Firefighter

Firefighters do a lot more in our communitry than I ever thought they did. All this time, I figured the only thing they do is put out fires, but turns out they do many more things. They rescue people, put out fires and come to different crime scences to keep our city safe and secure. I have gained a lot of respect and appreciation for the jobs they do on a daily basis. They risk their lives everday just to make ours a little better.

Our society.

Our society judges people way too much...

They tell girls that they're not skinny enough, pretty enough, smart enough etc... They portray these in different kinds of media like television, and music. No one should have to feel like they're not good enough to be on our world just because one person says it. Teenagers shouldn't be so hard on themselves, they're only giving society an even bigger reason to be harsh on them. Everyone is different and unique. Don't let anyone get in the way of you and your happiness.

V for Vendetta

should the government be able to listen in our homes in order to keep us safe?

No, I do not think the government should be able to involve themselves into peoples private lives at all. Everyone should be able to feel safe and secure in their homes and not always worry about if someone is listening or not. On the other hand, if the people in the house are doing something illegal, than I think it is okay for the government to step in and take control of the situation. Other than that, the government should be respectful to the people and let them be.

One thing I hate..

There is something that I can't stand, and that is in-class essays. I HATE them! I would rather take a couple days and write a really good paper then hand it in, than take an hour and be rushed with my work and get a lower mark because of it. I don't think essays prove anything for teachers, except that the students can write in a specific amount of time. Their writing ability should not be judged on one assignment they do, but in an overall average. Personally, I think they are a waste of time and there are better, more efficient ways of grading students.

My vote

If I had the chance to vote, I would definitely vote for the Liberal Party. There are many reasons that made me pick this. A few would be that they are giving students $1000 per year for university, 6 months of care leave, and more money for a child care plan. The Liberals are making changes taht will hopefully be permanent and be in place for a long time. Enviroment, health care, education, child/family care and taxation are all trying to be improved to make our life easier. All of these will benefit kids my age in the future and their families as well. This is why if I had a choice, I would vote for the Liberal Party.

FFP.

Personally, I think this course is working out really well for me! It is definitely a different style of teaching that I wasn't used to at the beginning, but after a while I really enjoyed it. I don't think this teaching method will work for some people because they need to be told to hand in assignments at certain times, to make sure that they get them in. Otherwise, with no specific due date, they probably wont hand anything in. Throughout this semester so far, I have learned a variety of skills including better time management, making more specific goals, and being determined to finish assignments to my best ability. It was been a positive experience for me, and not having an exam for English is a bonus for sure!

Twitter/Facebook...

Every time I log into one of these sites, I always seem to find a group of people having arguments with each other. Their problems aren't for the internet, keep them to yourself and deal with it in a mature way. No one wants to see it all over their timeline or news feed. Most of the time, it's always the same people doing it. Do they not realize all it does is make them look immature and like they have nothing better to do in their spare time?   Then a whole bunch of other people get involved and make the problem even bigger. Next time, everyone should take their problems off the internet and work them out maturely.

Phrases and words I like:

"Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names." by John Fitzgerald
"Life is simply the pursuit of something worth dying for." by David Van Boom
"I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them." by Pablo Picasso
"The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure." by Vince Lombardi
"Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters." by Albert Einstein Quotes
"If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?" by Albert Einstein
"Words are potent weapons for all causes, good or bad." by Manly P Hall One liners
"Things could always be worse; for instance, you could be ugly and work in the Post Office." by Adrienne E Gusoff
"Friendship improves happiness, and abates misery, by doubling our joys, and dividing our grief." by Joseph Addison
"Those who say truth is stranger than fiction have wasted their time on poorly written fiction." by Mark Twain Qutations

can our friends be our worst enemies?

It depends on how close or not the relationship is between the people, I guess. Typically when  friends get into arguments, they'll go through that phase where they ignore each other for a while, but then the next week be friends again. Then when two really close friends get in a big fight, it can make them do a lot of drastic things to the friendship. An example would be make up rumors, spread lies or end the relationship completely.

Friends can definitely become enemies, but I think only friends who have known each other for a long time and have been through a lot can get to this point.

Employees made films about making fun of patients..

I never thought anyone would actually have the heart to get dressed up, and record themselves as a patient while mocking their illness/disabilities. Honestly, I think this is so cruel and not funny at all. The patients can't help if they have something going on with their bodies.. They can't control it. So to think that someone would do this, is completely mind blowing to me. Also, employees say they didn't mean to anyone to get hurt by the videos.. but I can't see how someone wouldn't get offended by it? I'm pretty sure if that had happened to them, they would feel pretty bad about themselves too.

I don't know, I just think it was immature for grown adults to act that way. They should think twice about some things before they say or do it.

Wednesday 4 April 2012

do Canadian students need to learn French in high school?

Yes, I do think that high school students should be required to take a French course, but only in grade 9. After that students should have the right to choose if they would like to take French again, or not.

I think choosing another language course after grade 9 is very beneficial, both in the real world and it looks good on college and university applications. But that's only my opinion.

girls these days..

Everyday girls try to find something they hate about other girls, just so they feel bad about themselves. If they can't find anything they just make up stories about them and spread lies around. WHY?

I don't understand why they always need to be involved with drama, all it does it make you look fake and loose friends. Sometimes, you just need to let things go and move on instead of getting involved with things that don't involve you. BE MATURE AND LET IT GO.

From personal experiences, I am trying to become a better me and not care what people say. All it does is take up more time and energy into situations that will go no where. That's what many other people need to do as well, stop caring so much about who said this and that and focus on YOURSELF and YOUR life.

The idea of writing as a career.

Ever since I was a little kid I have enjoyed reading and writing, but I never thought of it as being a career choice for myself.

When Carrie Snyder came in and as she was talking about her life experiences and how the inspired her to write about them for everyone to read, it made me think that it is a really cool idea to share things with the public and let them know your opinion on certain things. When I was younger I had a journal that I would always write in, but after a while I started writing less everyday. Today after the guest speaker finished, I realized how much I missed it. Now, I would definitely consider a job in journalism because I just love writing, giving my opinion on things and I'm good at it!

Kony 2012.

I just found out about Joseph Kony about 2 weeks ago, and honestly I am disgusted with this mans behavior.

However, I think that many people who have watched this video became "activists" all of a sudden due to one video that went viral in a couple of days. Everyone was talking about this for the next couple of days and they all wanted to be involved with it in a good way, and help spread awareness to their friends and family to stop Joseph Kony this year.

After about a week, things seemed to die down and no one really payed attention to it anymore. Why though? What made this so much more important a week ago? and today it's like it never happened. I guess people were just caught up in the moment and saw that everyone else wanted to help, so they wanted too as well. Half the people who said they wanted to make a change, don't even mention Kony 2012 anymore.

are people good or evil?

In my opinion, I do not think that people are only good or only evil. In our life, certain things may happen to use that will either makes us really bad and want to lash out, or it can be a positive effect. Either way it is a learning experience and will help us grow individually as people. We all have our moments where we are going to lean more towards one side in situations, but it doesn't mean we are always evil or always good. I feel like most people have good intentions and want to help, but sometimes it might not always be the best option and portray them as being evil. All in all, I believe that we all are different and unique not just one thing.

Thursday 8 March 2012

what happened?

What ever happened to That's so Raven, Even Stevens and Boy meets World? That was the real family channel, not all these new shows they have. I have never watched anything more stupider in my life. They are taking 12 year old actors and trying to portray them as much older, mature people. But they're not. No new shows will
ever be able to replace the original shows they had back in 2005-2009.

I MISS THE OLD FAMILY CHANNEL :(

10 things that I hate.

people that..
1. slurp their drinks.. STOP! IT'S ANNOYING.
2. purposely walk/drive slow.
3. wear print on print outfits.
4. guys who say they have "euro swag"....
5. hate on where other people are from for NO reason at all.
6. add random people on Facebook so it looks like they have more friends..
7. are hypocrites.
8. act all smart but don't know what they're talking about.
9. quote things from movies/shows and saying they thought of it.
10. care about other people's opinions more than their own.

Friday 2 March 2012

toddlers & tiaras..

First of all, I blame the mothers of these girls for the whole thing. You're taking your 5 year old daughter and putting extentions, fake eyelashes, fake teeth and spray tanning them? Are you serious? They're not 20 years old, they're 5. I don't know why these parents are putting their children through all this? Half the kids on the show do not even like being in pageants, yet their mothers force them into it. It's like they want their kids to grow up so fast and not embrace their childhood. Also, this show portrays these kids as being rude and stubborn. Throughout the entire episode, they are crying and yelling for various reasons and viewers may see it as the kids being undisciplined. I bet half of them do not act like this on a regular basis, only when they are under pressure for pageants. Finally, I think that the mothers want their kids to pursue something that they want, rather than what the kids want to do, and it just seems unfair to be honest. You can't force a child to do an activity if they hate it, let them go off and find what they like doing. I think this show should be cancelled for all of these reasons.

Response to "racist white teen girls go on a rant about blacks" video.

These girls need a news flash. All they're doing is making themselves look pathetic because they're stereo-typing a race. Honestly, I don't even understand why these girls are making this video in the first place? It doesn't make them seem cool or something. Apparently they seem to know everything about everything and feel the need to post it on the internet, but all they're doing is causing negative attention to be put on them. THEN they blurt out the N word. Obviously these two have no respect for anyone or anything. She starts calling them stupid, ghetto, lazy, ugly, uneducated etc. Who do they think they are calling people this? This video honestly disgusts me. Especially how people can go on the internet and judge not just one person, but an ENTIRE race based on absolutely no proof. Then they wonder why so many people are hating on them? Both of them are so ignorant, stuck up and need a serious reality check. Think twice about something before you put it up for the entire world to see.

What a journey.

Every new year of high school comes with new challenges, new friends and new opportunities. For some it's a scary thought, but some can hardly wait to get out into the world and experience all the things high school has to offer.

My grade 9 year was.. interesting. I was excited but nervous at the same time. So far it has been a great experience because I learned the wrong and right things to do, and overall all it has done is help me grow as a person and find out who I am. I'm sure for many people it is the same, even if you hate high school or love it. Grade 10 is just as amazing, I am loving! I have met new friends and learned new things, but I have also lost people I used to be close with. That's okay though, high school is all about finding out who you are, your interests and what makes you happy. I hope by grade 12 everyone is proud of who they are and how they got there.

Lit cirlces.

The book I autimatically eliminated from my top 2 choices was "A Discovery of Witches" by Deborah Harkness. I removed this book because I do not really enjoy reading fantasy genres, I lose interest in them quickly. When I read the summarys for the other books, I became more drawn to them and wanted to read the books, but when I read the summary for this book I was not interested at all.

Teenagers asking viewers to judge their looks..

After I read this article, I was shocked at the number of people who make videos of themselves asking the youtube community if they are good looking or not. Honestly, everyone is beautiful and do not need to ask people consistanly about their looks. Surprising as it is, many people have become insecure about themselves, but they shouldn't be. Teenagers should not be so concerned about their appearence and what people think about them, you are who you are whether people like it or not. To me, this article is is making teens worred about their looks but they should not have to change for anyone!

Friday 24 February 2012

My inspiration.

I do not have a certain person or group that inspires me, I am inspired by anyone who was told that they could not do something, but yet proved everyone wrong in the end. Anyone can do anything, no matter what people say about it. Just to know that some people put their mind to something and accomplish it give me even more reasons to do all the things that people said I wouldn't be able to do.

13 Reasons Why.

For literature circles, I chose to read 13 reasons why by Jay Asher.  I was immediately sold when I read the summary for it and I have always gravitated towards mystery books and this is definitely one of them! I love reading a book that is unsure of what is happening until the end, it just makes me want to read it even more and never put it down. I'm really excited to read this book, I can't wait!

Friday 17 February 2012

Every since I was little..

Ever since I can remember, I have always wanted to pursue a job where I get to be involved in the lives of children and adults. I am a very social person and enjoy helping anyone any chance I get. Also, I would like to help change the world in some way by lowering poverty, world hunger and making it a safer and cleaner environment to everyone to live in. For right now, I might start making smaller changes like volunteering and recycling. In the future, I really want to try and make these things happen. Not for me, but for people who are in need of it.

Thursday 16 February 2012

The 5th year.

I think high schools should allow all students to take a fifth year of schooling if they need it. I mean, why not? It is not harming anyone or anything. All it is doing it letting students earn the credits they were not able to get and we should support them!

Thursday 9 February 2012

Make your OWN choices.

People should be able to vote, no matter what age they are! In some cases, younger generations know more about what is going on currently on in the news while older people have no clue or vise versa.  The minimum age requirement to vote is 18 years old, but people who are younger might have knowledge and would want to vote in someone who could benefit out society. Voting under the age of 18 should be legalized so that all ages can have a say in what goes on in our city. Also, with more people voting, these votes can help determine the winning and loosing side in case the numbers are close. A couple votes can make a big difference in who will be chosen to run the city. Do you want someone making your choices for you? No, only you can make decisions for yourself.

SAVE THE BABIES

In my opinion, I think that abortion should be illegal. I feel very strongly about this topic because if two people think they are old enough to have sex, then they are old enough to take care of a child. Abortion is basically killing your unborn child and I think most people just use it was a way to get ride of it and forget about the consequences. The number of abortions that happen every year influence our total population every year and it is not as big as it should be. Also, some people take pregnancy for granted. Some individuals cannot have children at all and they would do anything to be able to have their own child, but people who can don't take it seriously at all. Life is a precious thing and it shocks me how people can have abortions. If you are unfit to raise a child, there are much better options, like adoption. It will give them a chance to have a loving family that cares about them and a better life. Abortion is not the answer!
